San Diego
With about two hours of sleep and a quick McDonalds stop I made my way to San Diego! It was a pretty mellow drive, just jammed to some Little Feat and focused on the objective! I arrived to a warm welcome late morning on Saturday. Molly, Matt, and Eliza are something to behold. Throw half the amount of moving targets in my life and I would melt into a puddle of uncertainty. Molly and I immediately went to pick up some Mexican for lunch from a food truck not too far away. So much catching up to do and so little time to do it, so the density of conversation was palpable. After lunch and Eliza's nap we went for a family expedition to the point adjacent to San Diego (sometimes names escape me). Got a spectacular view of downtown across from the bay and checked out a lighthouse which was apparently always inadequate due to standard morning fog patterns. Saw some planes fly out over the bay, the whole planes overhead thing was a staple of the visit. We checked out the shoreline on the opposite side of the point and snagged some sweet photos before heading out! Supermoon looking like the Death Star lining up its sights right on downtown. Molly and Matt went to a dinner to wish some longtime friends well in their next adventure, and I biked to some event in a park. The vagueness of this description is due to my inherent desire to repress the memory. Talk about stress.... it felt like there were 100,000 people packed into this park and I was the only one who had no idea what was going on. I got stuck walking my bike with a crowd and it landed me on the opposite side of the park from the destination. Thus, I went on a bike-ride through downtown and around the park. It was so cool seeing the hustle and bustle from a spectators position, but I ain't about it. Made my way back towards the house and ended up kicking it in the Land Cruiser, I am not necessarily becoming a hermit... the solace of having ones whole life in a single, finite, place is unmistakable though. The following morning Eliza tried on a new head garment and I got to experience life in yet another fashion. Its so refreshing to witness how many ways one can achieve contentment. Attended a chili festival with Matt and Eliza (alongside one of their dad-friends who's name is on the wind) and obtained a sweet handmade bowl, then tried 6 different chili recipes in 7 samples. Thus, I quite obviously had a favorite: "Classic Ground Beef and Chorizo Chili - with a cookie!" Phenomenal. Matt and I biked to a market and picked up some pre-marinated meats along with other accoutrements. We grilled out for the friends whom I didn't get to hang out with the night before, some pretty rad cats full of life experience and captivating conversation. I've met so many people with such varied ambitions, the single unchanging component in all of these people is a willingness or want to follow through on those ambitions. Matt and I went for an eight mile hike the next morning and followed it up with a San Diego classic, the Cali Burrito. I needed a power-nap after laying waste to the french-fry stuffed abomination. Then Matt totally hooked it up with groceries for the next stint of my road-trip. In return I made some dinner while Matt picked up Molly and Eliza. Eliza was a fan, and that's all that matters. I love my family. Can't wait to see them in the not-so-distant future back on the right coast for Christmas!
